The Ecuadorian Hairless dogs also known as the rare hairless dogs from South America, originate from the western Santa Elena Peninsula, Ecuador. Additionally, They are created when the crossing between Mexica Xoloitzcuinti and the Peruvian Hairless dog occurs.  Their personality is the same as Peruvian’s: friendly and charming. They’re smaller than their parent breed, Xolo.

Interestingly, you can see small patches of fur on them because if their Xolo parent has any hair, they may inherit small patches of fur from them.

Infact, Hairless Dogs from Ecuador are not commonly found outside of its origin. Only a few dedicated breeders deal with this unique breed.

If you want to have one, be ready to pay a hefty amount.

However, it is challenging to find well-known breeders, as AKU needs more information and recognition about them.

How To Care For An Ecuadorian Hairless Dog

Food and Diet

A balanced diet of protein, carbs, vegetables, and fruits is the best diet for hairless dog breeds.

Giving them a high-protein formula with 20% animal protein is recommended.

Additionally, a diet containing whole grains and carbs is good, but a protein-rich diet will help in their cognitive development, the growth of their muscles and bones, and their health after maturity.

Exercise

Ecuadorian hairless dogs are fast and have the longest legs. For healthy maintenance, they need daily, hourly exercise. Without exercise, they may get frustrated. Mental health is also important. For this reason, to expand their minds, simple obedience training will be good for younger pups, and you can give toys and puzzles for mental stimulation to older ones.

Training

Training is an essential part of raising an Ecuadorian Dog breed. Early training, with gentle and firm guidance, is best for helping your dog learn good habits from the beginning.

However, potty training is usually easier, but obedience and leash training can be harder and a bit challenging, as puppies get distracted easily. The key tip is to be patient during all these stages, as puppies are like small children learning new things every day.

Positive affirmation works best, such as giving small treats and rewards when your dog does something right. Don’t negatively reinforce and avoid giving punishments; it will lead to fear and confusion.

In other words, dogs learn better when rewarded for good behavior. With your kindness, positivity, and patience, your dog will grow into an obedient, happy companion. While this breed may not be as obedient as others like the Ecuadorian Bulldog vs. American Bulldog, training is key.

Ecuadorian Hairless Dog Grooming And Maintenance

As the name suggests, hairless, Ecuadorian Hairless dogs don’t have much fur, but for Ecuadorian Hairless Dog grooming and maintenance  is still necessary like other dogs.. While there’s no fur on their body, they are more prone to skin issues like bugs, infections, and sunburn. Although there is no need for much brushing involved, that’s why regular baths are more critical.

In Addition, To keep their skin healthy, bathe them using a gentle, unscented shampoo, and don’t forget to pat them dry after each bath to avoid irritating them.

If your Ecuadorian Hairless dog has fur, it needs maintenance, too. Even though it may be too short to brush, you should keep it trimmed, especially if it’s on the face or head, ensuring that the fur doesn’t block their vision or cause any discomfort. Speaking of grooming, it’s also helpful to know how other breeds compare, such as French Bulldog vs English Bulldog in their maintenance needs.
